About The University

Swansea University is a research-led university that has been making a difference since 1920. The University community thrives on exploration and discovery and offers the right balance of excellent teaching and research, matched by an enviable quality of life.

Our stunning waterfront campuses and multicultural community make us a desirable workplace for colleagues from around the world. Our reward and benefits, and ways of working enable those who join us to have enriching careers, matched by an excellent work-life balance.

About The Role

We are recruiting a Research Assistant to develop GPU-accelerated high-performance scientific computing within the EPSRC programme grant REMODEL. Based at Swansea University, you will work at the intersection of GPU computing, scientific software and computational engineering, developing and optimising simulation software to exploit heterogeneous HPC systems, with the ambition of enabling large-scale and ultimately Exascale simulation.

A key objective of REMODEL is to develop mesh generation and adaptivity technologies that can operate at very large scale. Demonstrating these methods requires scalable solvers capable of driving demanding adaptive simulations. You will investigate how numerical algorithms, data structures and solver workflows can be redesigned and optimised for GPU architectures, working with low- and high-order numerical methods on unstructured meshes, with scope to investigate and shape effective approaches to GPU acceleration.

The work will span computational fluid dynamics and computational electromagnetics. A major focus will be the FLITE finite-volume CFD solver, an established code with a strong record of aerospace and research applications, including use by Airbus, NASA, ESA and BAE Systems, and in major aircraft development programmes such as the Airbus A340 and A380.

You will collaborate across the REMODEL consortium, supporting integration with advances in mesh generation, adaptivity and high-performance simulation workflows, while contributing to peer-reviewed publications and high-performance simulation capability.

At Swansea, you will join a technically focused and research-active group with strengths in computational engineering, numerical methods, mesh generation and high-performance computing, with access to modern HPC resources and established research software.

Applicants should demonstrate strong expertise in scientific programming, parallel computing and high-performance research software. Experience with Fortran and/or C++, MPI/OpenMP and GPU programming would be particularly relevant. Experience with numerical methods on unstructured meshes or HPC performance optimisation would be advantageous. See the job description for further details.

Equality, Diversity & Inclusion

The University is committed to supporting and promoting equality and diversity in all its practices and activities. We aim to establish an inclusive environment and welcome diverse applications from the following protected characteristics: age, disability, gender reassignment, marriage and civil partnership, pregnancy and maternity, race (including colour, nationality, ethnic and national origin), religion or belief, sex, sexual orientation.

As an inclusive and welcoming workplace, we value people for their skills regardless of their background. Applications are welcome in Welsh and will not be treated less favourably than those submitted in English.
